Tell us a little about yourself and why you started this business?
Hi! I’m Shaochen, tech leader turned full-time calligrapher and small business owner.
My entire career has been client-focused, first as a consultant to Fortune 500 companies, then leading Customer Success teams at Fortune 500 companies and startups in Silicon Valley. Transitioning into wedding calligraphy has been no different - I thrive on getting to know each of my clients, and I’m so excited to learn about you and your big day!
In the last decade, I’ve had the opportunity to help many small business owners, as well as to build startups in Silicon Valley, and more and more I was drawn to running a small business of my own. I spent much of my personal time on creative endeavors, and I’m finally letting my imagination run free with something I’m passionate about! My introduction to calligraphy came in the form of Chinese brush calligraphy when I was young, and eventually turned into a love of English calligraphy.
In addition to being a lettering fanatic, I’m a dog mom, avid flautist, national parks fanatic (I’ve been to 14 and counting!) and Southwest girl at heart even though I’ve lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for many years.
Oh and if you’re wondering how to say my name, maybe this pictogram will help?
Just maybe. 🚿-er + 💺-💨 + 🐔-h
What types of surfaces or props do you letter on? What's the strangest thing you have lettered on?!
So many! The most common are cardstock, handmade paper, acrylic, wood, agate, mirror - the list goes on! The most unique thing I've lettered on is a ukulele that a client wanted inscribed as a gift: https://www.instagram.com/p/B1MjQNzjnaQ/
How long have you been in business?
It will be 1 year full time in July!
What do you love most about what you do?
Hands down, being a part of my clients' big day and creating something that sparks joy for them and their guests. Writing people's names feels very personal to me and I like to imagine the guests' reactions when they see their name on place cards or a seating chart, something hand lettered just for them.
What makes your business stand out from other creative companies?
I like to think of myself as a left-brained creative, meaning that I'm a rare combo of hyper-organized, analytical, detail oriented plus artistic and creative. This is a benefit to you because I'm really good at managing many production schedules in parallel, working with your planner on logistics, and thinking about all the details!
How can potential new clients get in touch with you?
